The capital of the Prefecture of Rhodope, Komotini, is the seat of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, an administrative centre of Thrace and home of DUTH. Komotini is a modern urban center in continuous development in all sectors.
Komotini offers a lot more than many other provincial towns in Greece. In Komotini one can find good food, quality patisseries, traditional products, non-stop nightlife, adequate sports facilities, a theatre, four music schools, dance schools, museums, and since 2010 a Concert Hall; the third of its kind in Greece. The city also has a number of very good hotels. The road access along the coastline of the Prefecture of Rhodope is sufficient, and one can find hotels, camping sites, organized and free-access beaches with bars and water activities, restaurants and taverns. It is worth checking out Fanari, Arogi, Messi beach, Imeros beach, Profitis Ilias, Alkiona, Plataniti and Agios Haralambos.
The Concert Hall in Komotini was built in 2010 and it is the third of its kind in Greece, following those of Athens and Thessaloniki. The Concert Hall is also known as the Conference and Cultural Center of Komotini and it is housed in Building II, covering 6,623.81 sq.m.
The first construction phase of the Conference and Cultural Center of Komotini has:
- The ability to accommodate large formats (opera, theatre, etc.)
- Switchable scenery of large scale.
- Comfortable utility service areas.
Every year, on May 14, the liberation of Thrace is celebrated in Komotini. The festivities include a number of events with the main event being traditional dances, involving dance groups from all over Greece and abroad.
