University Research Center

The structure detects the needs of D.U.Th.’s academic/research community and provides guidance to stakeholders in utilizing their research results to develop innovative products and services.

Agroecology and Digital Agriculture

The Institute of Agroecology and Digital Agriculture promotes research and innovation in agricultural production. As a center of research excellence, education, and technology application, it aims to enhance sustainable practices and competitiveness in the agri-food sector. Its mission is to develop interdisciplinary research, foster innovative technologies, and implement agricultural production systems in various crops. Research areas include integrated pest control, pharmacology and ecotoxicology, soil science, regenerative agriculture, molecular biology and biotechnology, applied microbiology, waste and water management, digital and precision agriculture, and the use of renewable energy sources in agricultural production.
Through research, training, and demonstration fields, it encourages farmers to adopt new technologies, supporting sustainability, digital transformation, and green transition in agricultural production.

Tourism and Hospitality

The Institute of Tourism and Hospitality is dedicated to becoming a center of excellence for the promotion of scientific research, innovation, and sustainable development in the tourism and hospitality sectors. By focusing on the unique cultural, historical, and natural advantages of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the Institute aims to serve as a catalyst for regional economic development and cross-border cooperation. Its activities are organized into the following thematic areas: Cultural Tourism, Sustainable Tourism Development, Digital Tourism Innovation, Regional Tourism Economy, and Hospitality Management.
The Institute of Tourism and Hospitality will also function as a bridge between academic research and practical application, significantly contributing to the tourism development of the region while enhancing the University’s role as a driver of innovation and progress.

Petroleum Institute

The Petroleum Institute is a modern center for research, innovation, and education in the energy sector. Its mission is to advance fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research on energy-related issues, promote cross-disciplinary knowledge and innovative technologies, and provide training and certification of scientific personnel using immersive technologies. Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and highly specialized research staff, the Petroleum Institute operates across the entire value chain of the oil and gas industry: from exploration and production (upstream), to transportation and storage (midstream), and refining and processing (downstream). It also actively expands into renewable energy and environmental protection, fostering sustainable development and the green energy evolution.

Institute of Bioarchaeological Research

The Institute of Bioarchaeological Research holds a leading position in the research of anthropological material, aiming to reconstruct aspects of ancient life, such as living conditions, diet, and demographic characteristics of populations. Its mission is to promote interdisciplinary research in bioarchaeology, biological anthropology, human evolution, and cultural management, through the application of cutting-edge biochemical analyses, microscopy, and three-dimensional imaging. As part of its activities, the Institute carries out pioneering research projects and offers specialized services in the fields of culture, and the creative industries, enhancing public understanding of past human history.

Institute of Population Research

The Institute of Population Research is the only university institute in Greece dedicated exclusively to this field. Its primary area of activity is the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; however, it may extend its activities to other regions of Greece, as well as operate at the national and international levels. It is a research and educational institution focused on population dynamics—such as births, deaths, migration, and ageing—and their impact on the economic, social, and environmental patterns of a society. At the same time, it examines how these patterns influence population dynamics, emphasizing a reciprocal rather than a one-way relationship.

More specifically, the Institute focuses on demographic analysis, with studies covering population structure, trends, and spatial and temporal changes in population size, distribution, and composition, capturing all dimensions of a region’s demographic profile. In addition, it investigates socio-economic impacts, examining how population trends affect the environment, economy, employment, and social structures, as well as how these factors, in turn, influence population dynamics. Its findings contribute to policy development and planning by informing governmental policies and the strategies of other organizations concerned with population-related issues, such as healthcare, education, housing, and resource allocation. Finally, the Institute’s activities extend to academic and educational programs, as well as consulting services, providing expertise and advisory support to governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Institute for Natural Hazard and Disaster Risk Assessment and Management

The purpose of the Institute for Natural Hazard and Disaster Risk Assessment and Management is to develop, advance, and apply scientific knowledge in its field, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, innovation, and the societal value of research. Its work is structured around four central pillars.

First, it focuses on research and innovation in risk assessment, developing methodologies for qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, hazard mapping through geospatial data, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and artificial intelligence, as well as disaster scenarios and early warning systems.

At the same time, it specializes in disaster management and resilience enhancement through prevention, preparedness, and response strategies, as well as the evaluation of civil protection and spatial planning policies at the local, regional, and national levels. Furthermore, it examines the social dimension of disasters, placing particular emphasis on social vulnerability, risk perception, citizen participation, and the promotion of a culture of safety, while also implementing educational and training initiatives for students and public administration professionals. Finally, it promotes the transfer of knowledge and expertise to society and the economy by providing consulting services, risk assessments, and impact evaluations that support the design of sustainable and resilient public policies and investments.
