Gender Equality and Combating Discrimination Committee
The Gender Equality and Combating Discrimination Committee of Democritus University of Thrace (GECDC-DUTH) is an advisory body to the University and its governing authorities. It was established by Decision No. 35/28/23-07-2024 of the University’s Governing Council. The Committee’s mission is to promote gender equality and to combat discrimination based on gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, health status/disability, age, or sexual orientation at all levels of operation and in all procedures and activities of academic life. The Committee contributes to the prevention and management of all forms of discrimination, including the prevention and response to sexism, sexual harassment, and any kind of harassing behaviour within the institution. The Committee consists of nine members: six (6) members of Teaching and Research staff, one (1) member of Special Teaching Staff, Laboratory Teaching Staff or Special Technical Laboratory Staff, one (1) member of administrative staff, and one (1) student representative.
Responsibilities of GECDC-DUTH:
- a) Drafts and revises action plans for the promotion and safeguarding of substantive equality and the elimination of discrimination in the university’s educational, research, and administrative procedures. These plans are approved by the Senate, and an annual report is submitted to the Senate and the Governing Council. b) Proposes to the competent bodies measures to promote equality, combat discrimination, and address sexual harassment and all forms of harassing behaviour.
- c) Monitors and evaluates the implementation of these measures and their outcomes, recommending adjustments, revisions, or additions where necessary.
- d) Provides information and training to members of the academic community on matters within its scope.
- e) Encourages the development of academic programmes, seminars, and lectures focusing on gender equality and anti-discrimination topics.
- f) Promotes the conduct of studies and research on relevant subjects.
- g) Records reports and complaints related to discriminatory treatment, sexual harassment, or gender-based harassment and forwards them to the appropriate university authorities, in accordance with the University’s Internal Regulations and current legislation.
- h) Offers support to victims of discrimination, sexual harassment, or harassing conduct when they report such incidents.
Reporting to the Committee
- Students of DUTH have the right to report incidents of discriminatory behaviour to the Committee for GECDC-DUTH. Reports may be submitted either by the person affected or by individuals who have witnessed such incidents.
- Reports may be submitted anonymously or with identification.
