The Research Committee was established on November 26th 1981 based on the Presidential Decree 432/1981 ‘About setting up Special Accounts for the utilization of funds for undertaking research in Higher Education Institutions of the Country’ during the 187th meeting of the Senate. This action signaled the foundation of the Special Account Research Funds at Democritus University of Thrace.
The Special Account Research Funds (SARF) is established and operates in all Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and its primary objective is the management and utilization of funds for research purposes, education, training, technological development and innovation and for the provision of other, related services for the fulfillment of its aims (Law 4485/4-8-2017, FEK 114, no. 50).
The aim of SARF is the funds management and distribution that originate from any source as well as from its resources, and they are destined to be used for any kind of cost coverage that is necessary for the execution of research, educational, training, developmental projects and programs of continuous training, seminars and conventions, for the provision of scientific, technological and artistic services, for the undertaking of special and clinical studies, tests performance, measurements, lab tests and analyses, counseling provision, specification drafting on behalf of third parties, planning and implementation of scientific, research, cultural and developmental programs and other related services to the benefit of the Institution.
SARF’s administration and management are carried out by its bodies and is independent from the administration and management of Higher Education Institutions.

The Financial and Administrative Support Unit (FASU) in SARF is the service responsible for
SARF’s administrative and financial support.
The Principal Officer of the Financial and Administrative Support Unit (FASU) is responsible for the services provided by the Unit and acts as the Principal Officer of the Financial Services (POFS) in SARF.
SARF’s Research and Management Committee is the decision-making body and acts independently of the administrative bodies of the Institution. The Committee is established in all Higher Education Institutions by Recto’s decision and it consists of representative members from all Departments and the Vice-Rector of Research as the President
